Coaches, you shouldn’t be reading this blog

…instead, you should be reading Vern Gambetta’s Blog

Why?  He’s a former track coach (and former decathlete) who has let his curiosity guide him through a far reaching coaching career ; his travels to work with teams and athletes throughout the world and has given him unique opportunities to understand other sports, enabling him to synthesize a truly holistic approach to coaching.  Additionally, he’s gone out of his way to understand and appropriate elements from the world of Physical Therapy into his coaching programs.  Couple that with decades of working with athletes and you have a coach who is part Physical Therapists, part psychotherapist and part gym rat.  (note: more on the importance of communication later this fall, but if you want a jump start read “Let Me Tell You a Story” by Red Auerbach and John Feinstien – great read).  And under the heading of ‘putting your money where you mouth is’ i can honestly say this is the only blog I read and that 90% of the time the latest post stays with me, providing a mental morsel to chew on until his next post.  That’s the point of a blog, right?  To kick-start your mind and your innate curiosity about the world around you, or if the months of August, September, October and November to get you thinking about how you can improve the efficacy of your cross country coaching.

Should you buy Vern’s latest book, Athletic Development: The Art and Science of Functional Sports Conditioning ?  Yes.  But first start with his blog – even if that means you don’t read this blog – and I guarantee that you’ll read something that makes you think and helps you become a better coach.
