Summer General Strength Progression

I’m excited about this series for RunningTimes.com – it’s a progression of General Strength exercises that takes you 1-2 weeks at a time and will run through the summer. If your an athlete and can’t afford the DVDs this is a great substitute – and it’s FREE! If you’re a coach and you want a set of exercises for your athletes when they’re on vacation and you can’t meet them then this will fill that void.

hey Jay, I am new to the website, but not new to general strenght routines. How often would you incorporate this routine into a week of training? Say the high school level? Is this something you should do before or after a run or workout?
  • i have found runnersspace.com to be kind of chaotic and annoying... (sorry)... i will post them on our team blog <http: hamiltontrack.blogspot.com=""> thanks for the encouragement... </http:>
  • thanks for putting these together... i will be sharing them with my track team as they transition to xc in the fall... we have some new athletes that REALLY need work like this...

I may "steal" the idea and have my athletes record some of the routines that we do... thanks for the inspiration...
  • Would love to see it....you should make a team page on RunnerSpace.com if you decide to do the video thing.
  • On a different project I am also trying to put together a mini-library on my
ipod of all the routines (both mine and yours) to have athletes use during
practice... I really like the Blue Monk, Vern Leg, plyoaccels and Lateral
Lunge routine but I cant find a way to download them... (reason 100 why
    runnerspace frustrates me)

any chance you can throw them up on vimeo (or directly to me)? I know you
are doing a thousand different things, but if you have a chance....

thanks again for all you do for the sport... your routines and positive
spirit has helped me get refocused on fitness and getting my athletes
    strong..

  • Well, I have to be honest, I like that people can't download the runnerspace videos because a lot of that content is either in the RunningDVDs.com series or is content that I want to make the focus of future DVDs.

That said, I do want to share that content here and I just need to figure out the best method, yet I doubt that will happen this summer.

Also, the idea that I would share those for free at a site like RunnerSpace and then have a subscription option to this site - which includes downloads to all the videos - is also a possibility.

In the mean time I hope the athletes can simply watch the videos online to learn the routines and then execute the routines on the track.

Thanks for the comment and if others want to chime in about the subscription model (vs. me producing more DVDs) please let me know.

I enjoy the simplicity of the exercises in the video. Possibly because I fit more in the target audience. They are exercises that can help athletes who are at a lot of different levels. You have asked what people like about this blog - this is one thing I enjoy and keep coming back for. Thanks .
  • Thanks Neal. I'm going to look for a balance - some in depth answers to difficult questions (and my best guess) but also more videos like this.

Once we get RunnersCoach.com up and running then I will have two options to share content, though it's good to know that videos like this one are important.

    Thanks again.

Jay, you cut your hair! I think one thing that we all need to take away from this is that the volume to be done needs to be different for those at different levels. Jay, you've said that before, but I don't think you mention in this particular video. I'm guessing that you lowered the volume for the general Running Times audience.

I also wanted to thank you again for all your contributions. A lot of other coaches tend to be guarded with their training and I feel that is counterproductive to having a highly successful post-collegiate system. Your openness and enthusiastic attitude keep me coming back to watch more!
  • Thanks, and yes, you need to be mindful of the volumes, yet the great thing about this series is that this particular series is very conservative - you do the routines during each 2 week period you'll definitely be able to handle the next assignment.
