Irrational Exuberance?

It’s been over two weeks since the last post…and this post really isn’t that cool.  However, in the coming weeks I will be able to post regularly and I’ve got several things I want to share in the hopes that you’ll be interested and want to comment.  But before we get to the cool posts….

Why aren’t the CU teams ranked higher?  Two weeks ago both the CU men’s and women’s team had BY FAR their best Rocky Mountain Shootout.  How good?  The men had their fifth guy at 25:15.  In past years – years when the men have WON the NCAA title – the 5th man has been closer to 26:00.  On the women’s side the 5th woman was low 21′s this year; when the women last won the 5th woman was high 21′s.  Combine that fact with the fact that a 1 point scorer makes a bigger difference at the NCAA meet than at any of the smaller meets during the year, then CU’s women look better then they’ve ever looked.

Now, I’ll be honest – I have no clue how good any of the teams in the NCAA are…but who cares?  With the CU Shootout results two weeks ago, I can’t see how either this poll or this poll can have the men as low as 4th and 6th; the face the NCAA coaches have the CU women 19th is not laughable.  I know the NCAA coaches are too busy to go back and see what 25:00 or 21:00 means in Boulder at the Shootout, but you’d think some stat geek would have run the numbers.

Tomorrow I hope to run 12 miles on Magnolia road then shoot some video for the next DVD up in the hills.  By the time I return to my computer here in Denver the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet will be coming to a close and we’ll know how CU stacks up. Who knows, maybe I’m irrationally exuberant about CU’s prospects for the NCAA meet.   But the bottom line is this: CU’s Rocky Mountain Shootout performances in early October 2009 predict great things for late November 2009.

The Shootout was indeed quite fast this year. Perhaps an even more promising (though slightly counterintuitive) sign would be a disastrous Big 12 meet. The last two times the men have won, it's come after a getting beat by a bunch of (with all due respect) nerds at conference.
Of course, they murdered people in 2001, but the depth of the Big 12 has improved a bit since those days.
Sure would be nice to have a low stick though ...

Jay, why are pre-season or even mid-season rankings such a big deal? Surely it's all just a 2 bit sideshow that heaps extra pressure on the athletes and coaches for no reason? I'd hate to be in a position where my athletes started to care about the results of some coaches poll, when they should really be worried only about their grades, training and racing.

Do you feel that these polls are a positive or negative element of your system over there?

Jay, I think both teams' performances, especially the ladies, validated your assumption here.

Pretty proud of Ms. Tremblay right now!

Here's hoping they stay on track and improve over the course of the season in typical CU fashion. If so, wow.
