Clinics – Wisconsin Track Coaches 2010

I sincerely enjoyed the opportunity to speak at this clinic. Great energy in the room and a welcoming and warm clinic staff made this clinic a highlight of the year thus far. Below are the slides for each of the talks, in the same order as I gave the talks. Below are links to videos I referred to, as well as three articles that I think all HS coaches should read before the outdoor season begins.

Thanks again to everyone in Milwaukee.

Circuit Workout. Ideally you’d watch all of the videos in the Anatomy of a Workout series, yet the two videos below give a feel for what a circuit of running and general strength looks like.

Must Read

Matt Fitzgerld article “The Lactic Acid Myths.”

Running Times article written by Lorraine Moller, “Essential Lydiard.”

Greg Brock interview from LetsRun.com is a must read. The connector workout he discusses highlights the importance of lactate and training runners to deal with lactate.

Jay – listened to all of your presentations on Friday and was very impressed by your energy and presentations. I am fairly new to the distance world as a coach. Wondering if yourself or anyone else out there can give me some good examples of shakeout runs to do the day before a race. Thanks to any and all that might be able to help. You are awesome Jay!

I'm assuming that you are asking about CC? But we do pretty much a similiar thing for track with our 1600-3200 runners. 3-5 miles easy Leg Swings/Leg Drills (A, B, Fast Feet, High Knees 2 x 30, hurdle walk overs) 2-4 x 50-100 strides walk back or jog (usually on the grass or football field) I have been a bit more flexible with each individual athlete in trying to meet their needs. Some like shorter runs others prefer a longer runs, we work together to find out what works best. 800/1600 meter runners prefer a shorter run, followed by 3 minutes of ins/outs every 50 meters. They then do 4 strides at race pace, two at race start and two at race pace.

Jay, after looking over your notes for the Wisconsin clinic (recipe for running)…I wanted to know when you think hill running should be incorporated since very often the hills can be a hard work out, even on so called easy days. If you are running your speed sessions on Tuesday and Friday, then I am assuming a Monday would be ok for hill running (not repeats, just adding it into the context of a training run), but would a second day be possible given the recovery that would need to take place after tuesday, but before Friday and then again after friday? Thanks and I appreciate all of your material and advice. You are very refreshing in your view points.
