Practice what you Preach

I don’t always practice what I preach, but I do do the lunge matrix before every run. I should do more mobility and flexibility work before each run but somehow I convince myself that I don’t have enough time and that the extra 4 minutes of running is of greater benefit then properly preparing for the run. As my college track coach liked to say, “Never underestimate the human capacity for self-deception.”

Congrats, Jay. I can only imagine how many walked by you and said, “wow–what a dork!”

Thanks for the explanation, Coach. It was my first reaction — “Where the heck is he?”
    Love the quote, too.

I'm digging these real-time videos (like this and the Core H one). That makes it easy to follow along.

Maybe when I visit in May you can explain why I'm unable to do the scissors kick/breast stroke motion in the Core H routine. And that's with being able to pat my head while rubbing my tummy!

I had to laugh at the video, the explanation, and your instructions to practice what we preach…I'm very good at telling other people to do the lunge matrix, but not so good at actually making myself do it. I'll work on that!

Couldn't agree more with the practice what you preach comment. I think a lot of the junk or bad ideas that we prescribe as workouts as coaches could be eliminated if the coach actually just tried what they prescribed. Some of the best coaches I know prescribed to the idea of testing it out on themselves before giving it to their athletes.

I am an slow, old, adult onset runner, but I still really enjoy your site and information. This is great, because I typically just get up and run without doing anything to warm up. I am definitely going to try this tomorrow!! Thanks for having this site!!!
