Podcast 001 – Corey Ihmels Interview

I’m excited that Corey Ihmels, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at Iowa State University, is the first guest on the podcast.  20 years ago Corey won the Kinney (now Footlocker) National Championship.

The conversation covers a lot of ground, including a recap of the 2011 cross country teams at Iowa State, Corey’s high school training and the influence his high school coach has had on his coaching, the development and accomplishments of collegiate 10k record holder Lisa Uhl, and the career path Corey has taken from a volunteer assistant at Arizona State to his current position at Iowa State.

The interview if 85 minutes long. We were shooting for an hour, but we obviously went over. The audio is decent, but will be improved in future podcasts. Definitely user error on my part. If you’re a hardcore audiophile, my apologies for the quality of sound. Hopefully the quality of the content will make up for it.

Click here to download the podcast in iTunes. If you want to download the file (then import it into iTunes and listen to it that way) that option is available below a the link titled “download.”

Note: I refer to this video during the podcast where Corey talks about the “the little things” and their importance for runners that want to reach their potential.

Thanks Mark.  I promise I'll get to the question you emailed me.  Thanks for your patience.

This comment only tangentially relates to the podcast.

I got an email todays from a web site guru with the subject line, “Your WordPress site has a problem….”  My first reaction was, “Oh no, what's wrong.”  Then the body of the email says:

“Hey Jay Johnson, I noticed you are missing a critical element on your blog…TRAFFIC!
You and I both know that No Traffic  = No Business!

Well, I have a special gift for you which will help with this problem (being the holidays and such).”
The email goes on to say he will give you his wordpress plugin for free.  Great.

The reason I share this for you is two fold.  First, I'd rather have the blog with a small readership that is thoughtful and engaged than a large readership that is ornery and difficult.  Second, I thought I'd sare this with you because I know that 85 minutes is too long an interview for some of you to listen to, and that's okay.  Corey and I had a lot to talk about and I think the podcast above  works well as a cohesive narrative.  Let's face it, name another Kinney/Footlocker champ who has coached a collegiate record holder.  His journey as an athlete and a coach is really interesting and at the very least there was one person, me, that really enjoyed what he had to say.

By no means am I trying to turn away people from this blog with the podcast.  Rather, I want any interview to be in-depth, with more than one nugget that a runner and coach can take from the interview.  If someone doesn't have time to listen to a podcast, no worries – most of the posts won't be podcasts.  But the flip side is I hope that as I do more of these interviews they will be the type of thing you download to take along on a road trip or to get you through a monotonous long run on the treadmill.

Thanks again to everyone who reads this blog and I look forward to the upcoming podcasts…for the simple reason that I'm curious to see what the guests have to say ;-)

    Jay,
I really enjoyed the podcast. I hope to hear more in the near future. Not too long at all. This is the perfect time of year for this.
