Really looking forward to the comments after watching this video. Also, if you don’t have time to watch the entire video, you can scroll through it a minute at a time and you won’t miss much.

This is fantastic on several levels. It shows emphasis on general strength and fitness – something many here seem to assume the Kenyan elites never work on. But, more important than that, I think, is the sense that these runners seem to enjoy the training and the company. It’s hard to ignore the fact that the best distance runners seem bred in a communal atmosphere.

What timing, our running group did a general strength workout this morning! Feels great to know what bits were hard and what needs some attention, which sometimes is hard to gauge from just running. The Kenyans seem to do a large amount of resistance running with those bands. Is this a newer or seldom used practice?

What a great resource. In my “opinion” the negative comments on Flotrack are way off. I really think the majority of the power in running comes from the hip/core area and this routine puts a great emphasis on this area… along with some plyo/jumping exercises to develop a “stiff” stride. There are only a few exercises (1. running in place with band; 2. 6 x hurdle jumps; 3. jumping rope single and double; 4. tire pulls; 5. high knees/strides; 6. stretching).
“Americans not training in the rain… or not willing to put in this work” is ludicrous. The video goes to show that you can do a lot with minimal resources. You don’t need fancy gym equipment or complex routines.
Something that I find interesting is the range of athletic ability that is shown. Some athletes have a hard time doing the double leg jumps over hurdles and most have a hard time jumping rope for an extended period of time.
QUESTION: So how much do these types of skills contribute to running fast? Kiprop seems to demonstrate good athleticism. I wonder what the athletes that struggle with these exercise/drills can run?
Focus on ways to support running fast and develop that. Strong hips and core… a stiff stride. Do this in a variety of ways. Just a small piece to the puzzle… but an important piece.
