Can Kids Really PR All Season?
December 9, 2025
Hello!
Today let's talk about how you can have kids PR throughout the months of April and May. Specifically I'm going to explain…
- How kids can PR every time the weather is nice in April and May
- How you can have all of your kids healthy (and not have any shin splint, IT-band, or hamstring issues)
- How we can make sure they "peak" at the right time (and ensure that the JV and varsity kids run their fastest when they need to)
- How we can free up your workload in April and May so you can focus on kids during practice (and have the little conversations that you need to have to ensure they are racing to their potential)
- Imagine this: Your entire team running personal records meet after meet, peaking perfectly for championships, while you're actually enjoying the season instead of drowning in stress during the crucial months of April and May.
Your Blueprint for a Record-Breaking Season Starts Here
I loved what one of my daughter's coaches said at the cross country banquet. "The three most important words in cross country are June, July, and August."
With that in mind, I can tell you from 25+ years of experience that the road to getting to April and May with a healthy team that has PRs every meet is having a plan in December, January, and February so that when the season starts you're not overwhelmed.
With track season demanding unique training plans for multiple events, winter is your golden opportunity to get ahead - before you're swamped with meet entries, uniform logistics, and bus schedules.
You need training for:
- 3200m kids (not super complicated)
- 1600m kids (more complicated than you think)
- 800m kids (this is the hardest group to coach for most coaches)
- 800m kids who will run on your varsity 4x400m (most coaches don't know what to do with these kids)
And what about your cross country kids who are young and will be the backbone of that team in the coming years? They need to run PRs in the 1600m. And they need to be able to run solid 3200m races and 800m races.
If your freshmen and sophomore cross country kids can't run solid 1600m times and decent to good 800m times, that's a problem. Sure, they may end up being 3200m specialists their junior and senior year, but the road to being the best 3200m runner they can be starts with being good in the 1600m the first two years of high school.
Back to the list above…
In the Track Training System, there are plans for all of those kids.
This includes…
- Upperclassmen who ran a lot of mileage in cross country
- Freshmen and sophomores who didn't run a lot of mileage in cross country
- Winter sports athletes who will come out for the team in late February or early March
- Kids who won't train this winter but want to run with you in the spring
After years of real-world testing and refinement with thousands of athletes, the Track Training System now delivers custom-tailored training plans for every single runner on your team - from your December veterans to your March newcomers.
Don't Take It From Me
Here's what your peers are saying about the Track Training System (TTS)...
"The TTS was a game changer for our program.
In our first season using it last spring our athletes, both JV and Varsity ran PRs and many did so multiple times. They were prepared and executed their fastest performances late in the season.
We had athletes qualify for the State Meet for the first time.
Watch as your athletes' confidence soars with each PR, creating an unstoppable momentum that carries through summer training and launches you into a dominant cross country season.
To see our kids succeed from top to bottom and have a blast was worth the cost of the program.
I would highly recommend it to any coach." - Sara Schwendinger, Iowa
And Sara's not the only one with kids PRing and staying injury-free.
"We started the TTS training in 2022. First, I want to say the kids loved it. We saw each kid set personal records in their events.
Most importantly, we did not have any setback injuries.
As a coach, I loved it because it allowed me to not stress about workouts to do and took the guessing game out of it. It's nice to have Jay be a mentor for you and have open conversations about what's best for the kids.
I cannot thank Jay enough for his dedication to the sport of running and coaching us coaches. His system has been a game-changer for our program!" - Whitney Enis, Texas
