Don't fail your best athletes
Published September 3, 2025
Hey there!
It's early September, and you no doubt have the workouts planned. But the question today is, what are you going to do with the kids who trained all summer but are already dealing with race-day anxiety?
Related, do you have a resource you can share with your kids that will guide them on how to eat in preparation for a 4 pm meet after school versus a morning meet where they'll race at 9 am?
You don't need to be a sports psychologist, and you don't need to be a nutritionist in addition to being a coach. But you do need to get your kids the best resources so they can have the best cross-country season of their lives.
I know this can be an overwhelming time of year, but here's the honest truth: if you don't have these resources for your athletes, you're not doing everything you can for them.
Think about the kids who met with you this summer and were consistent in training. You would both be heartbroken if they get to the last three meets of the year and run poorly because they had weeks and weeks of poor self-talk and subpar nutrition.
The flip side? You can be packing up the tent at the last meet of the year, knowing you did everything to help these kids who've been serious since June reach their potential this year.
"But Jay, will this Complete High School Runner course really help my team? And how will I use it? And how do I know it's worth the money?"
Rather than me answering these questions, it's much better to hear from your peers and to hear how this program is helping their athletes race to their potential.
Here's what Coach McCoy, a young coach building her program, has to say about the mental skills component...
"The Complete High School Runner takes it to the next level and covers areas that don't get a lot of attention, or coaches just have to navigate themselves from personal experience.
For a young coach who had no idea how to help students with race anxiety, strategy, etc., it was invaluable.
The segment on Nutrition is gold. It was hands down the best presentation on nutrition 'through the lens of a distance runner' that I have ever seen. I learned a lot and was able to take some of her key points and teach my athletes how to implement them in their lives.
We are already seeing improvement in general feeling and energy."
Now you might be thinking...
"Alright, Jay, I can see how the course helps with mental skills and nutrition. But is it worth the investment?"
Coach McCoy addresses this directly:
"As a young coach with a family, I would say this course is worth every penny and an investment that you would not regret."
The course isn't just for new coaches.
Jim Andrews, whose team won the state title two seasons ago, used this course and has this to say…
"I felt the course was a great value for the content.
Over the season many of the videos we would pull discussions from and have team talks over. The runners found a lot of value in hearing others talk about visualization techniques that transformed how they raced at certain courses.
When we got to the state course, we walked over most of it and took time to talk and visualize each segment and break it down for the following day. They went out and executed to perfection what was needed to PR and win a state title.
Thanks Jay for your help this season."
Now you know how the course has impacted other programs, but you might be thinking...
"I'm not sure how I'll use this with my team. How will I teach them these skills?"
Rhonda Beadell is a hard-working coach with a program where the kids put in the training year-round. And while she has always done an exceptional job with workouts and training, before enrolling in the course she said she didn't feel comfortable teaching mental skills to kids.
"The course was a game changer for our team this last season.
Every week we would listen to a segment for 25 minutes (teenage max attention span!) and some weeks we would double up for two days. Kids had the option to take notes to keep in a folder and they wrote a ton!
There were so many powerful pieces that moved us.
John O'Malley's message of performing not for yourself, but in the service to honor others moved us toward a bond that led our boys to a Regional title.
I had my girls listen to Dan Iverson's explanation of how girls are not faster than women and it helped so many of them going through those tough physical changes and knowing that they can continue to improve.
Shannon Thompson was incredible and gave us concrete strategies to put into action each week.
Jay's visualizations took us through the end of the season and kids started making it a regular practice.
From the breathing and relaxation strategies to Steve Magness' amazing analysis of the power of our own thinking, we got so much from this course! We didn't even get through all of it!
Our last segment was perfect with Jesse's infectiously positive talk making them truly happy and grateful to be on the State Championship line.
As a coach I've never felt confident with the sports psychology side of training, but now I do.
It was exactly what we needed, so thank you Jay for putting together such a valuable tool."
