Training Plans for NXR

Published November 2, 2025

Hello!

This is always a tricky time of year for me to write a post.

Some states, like the state I'm in, Colorado, had their state championship yesterday. Other states, like California, still have a long way to go. And state like Nebraska have been done for over a week.

But at some point, no matter what state you're in, you likely have kids who are doing one of two things:

  1. They're going to run at a postseason meet like NXR or RunningLane
  2. They're needing to take a break

So that's what we're going to talk about today with two detailed articles/pdfs for your kids.

Training Plans for Post-Season Meets

For those of us in Colorado, we have a 3-week preparation window for this meet, which I find ideal. However, I've developed training plans to accommodate 2-week and 4-week preparation periods as well.

Then you can click here to download the PDF with the daily training - but make sure you read the article first!

Two Week Break Between XC and Track

For athletes concluding their season, I've outlined recommended activities for the next two weeks. This includes moderate running and exercise this week, followed by light running the following week.

Remember: these athletes have more recovery time between now and the championship season than they had from June until this weekend's meet.

And if you have kids running NXR, be sure to bookmark this article as this is the plan you'll likely want to put them on after that meet.

Looking Ahead

Whether your athletes are preparing for November competitions or winding down for a brief break in late November/early December, we'll be discussing track training soon.

I'll be offering several free live courses focusing on track training. These sessions will cover how to prepare your athletes not just to PR this track season, but to maximize their performance at every opportunity when weather conditions are favorable.

Having helped hundreds of coaches achieve their best cross-country season yet this fall, I'm excited about the opportunity to support you and your athletes during the upcoming track season.

For now, let's focus on meeting your team's immediate needs for the remainder of this month.

One Quick Favor

If you find these articles helpful I'd be great if you forwarded them to a fellow coach. Or forwarded the articles to parents and athletes, especially if you're trying to go get them on board with the plan for taking a break after XC.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Let's go!

P.S - 74 days from today 200+ coaches will be in Boulder for the premier high school distance clinic.

"This was my first Boulder Running Clinic and will definitely not be my last.

I have attended many other clinics, but this was amazing.

Sometimes other clinic speakers are collegiate or professional coaches that do not have the same difficulties we experience in high school. Coaching high school is a different set of challenges and I feel the Boulder Running Clinic is geared specifically for us.

Each speaker brought a different set of experiences to share, making each presentation thought provoking and full of ideas to consider. I feel I improved as a coach just being there.

I also feel the whole clinic was geared toward collaboration and interaction with other coaches from all over the U.S. I made so many contacts, and friends over a 3 day period. It was a great experience!

The clinic was well worth my time and money to attend. I think the value supersedes similar costs incurred at other clinics.

I traveled from Ohio and felt it was worth the flight cost to experience this caliber of speakers and collaboration. I feel the videos are very helpful to review at a later time.

Attending the clinic can feel overwhelming, but the reassurance that the content can be reviewed later is a big benefit." - Tom Vernot
