Daily workouts for 24 weeks for 800m, 1600m and 3200m, for both boys and girls. Plus four plans in February using three coach's meet schedules as case studies.

Pre- and post-run Training

Detailed pre- and post-run routines that fit the theme of each workout. A video library of each is included and accessible through the app.

My Coaching

Regular webinars to answer your questions about the training, plus questions answered with each video module.

Is your program where you want it to be? If not, as yourself these three questions:

  1. Do I have an optimal training plan for my athletes that I’m confident will lead to them running PRs?
  2. Do I fully understand how to integrate pre- and post-run work into a session?
  3. Am I making the right adjustments during the season to help athletes run PRs?

The Best Coaches Do This

The best coaches have spent years devising and refining a training plan that works for them. Patient trial and error, with good note keeping and logical adjustments, result in a useful system. But there’s a better way. I can speed up this process and help you and your program make a jump this spring, rather than several seasons from now.

Plus, a great track season will propel your program to a fantastic cross country season.

A system that works in any environment

I’ve coached for more than two decades, including Olympic Trails qualifiers at 800m and 1,500m, as well a USATF National Champion at 3,000m. I’ve written dozens of training plans for high school athletes and coaches. As a result, I have a system that will work in any environment. Once you learn the system, you can make minor adjustments to optimize the training for you. I’ll share all the details of my system, with volumes and intensities appropriate for high school athletes of varying training ages.

Why Wait to be Elite?

I was just like you.

I was an eager coach willing to put in the hours to have a great team and help athletes reach their potential. I loved writing training (and still do). I took decent notes throughout the season to make adjustments for next season.

The problem is, I coached at the college level for eight years before I had a system that worked for 800m, 1600m and 3200m. While some of the key elements of the system weren’t new, the integration of the pre- and post-run work was. And the focus on continuous track workouts for milers and 3200m runners are elements in my system that took years to optimize.

Don’t get me wrong, writing training is one of my favorite parts of coaching. But I could have gotten to a level of mastery sooner if I’d started using an effective system to start, then adjusted it for my environment over 3-5 years. I can shave years off your learning curve by giving you training that works this season. You’ll learn the rationale behind the training and, as the season progresses, you’ll learn how to make your own adjustments. We’ll do this together: you and I and the other committed coaches in the course. I’ll answer questions during monthly webinars and each week, either by video or text.

There’s no reason it should take you years to make your program one of your state’s best. While I can’t help you with the challenging work of recruiting talent, I can take the guesswork of training and help you learn a system that works in any environment, one you can own over the coming years.

A bit about me

I’ve coached high school, collegiate, and professional runners for more than two decades, including three USATF champions in cross country, indoor track, and road racing. I studied kinesiology and applied physiology at the University of Colorado, where I was a member of the varsity cross country team featured in Chris Lear's cult-classic Running with the Buffaloes. I earned my M.S. in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from CU in 2000. I ran modest PRs of 3:49.5/1,500m, 8:20/3,000m, 14:20/5,000m and 30:15/10,000m.

I’ve written two books. Consistency Is Key: 15 Ways to Unlock Your Potential as a High School Runner was published in June 2020 and has sold over 10,000 copies. Simple Marathon Training: The Right Training for Busy Adults with Hectic Lives has helped hundreds of runners toe the starting line injury-free and ready to PR.

I‘ve written for brands such as Nike, sites like PodiumRunner.com, and magazines including the much beloved but defunct Running Times. I’ve been quoted in several publications, including WiredOutside, and Runner's World.

I post videos weekly on my YouTube channel, which has over 2.5 million views. I post on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn each week, though I typically don’t respond to DMs. You can email me at [email protected] if you think I can be helpful. For coaching inquiries put “coaching” in the subject line and I’ll get back to you promptly.

The Plan

Here’s how we’ll work together to help your athletes run big PRs this spring:
  1. You’ll enroll in the course and get immediate access to all teaching modules, plus the pre- and post-run videos.
  2. You’ll start with the quick-start video explaining how to use the Kajabi app. You can watch these videos on any device.
  3. Then you’ll watch the video modules explaining the training rationale.
  4. Next, you’ll study the 24-week 1600m fundamental training plan. There are multiple training plans – for 800m, 1600m and 3200m – you’ll have lifetime access to. Start by studying the 1600m fundamental plan.
  5. Add the webinar dates and times on your calendar. If you can’t make it live, you can still ask questions in the app that I’ll answer during the webinar or via video or text afterward. The recording of the webinar, including a separate audio file (which you can listen to like a podcast), will posted within 48 hours.
  6. You can also ask questions about each block of training. I’ll answer those via video and text, depending on the best way to communicate/teach.

“I can’t tell.

Is TTS right for me and my program?"

Great question. Let’s talk about what it is and what it’s not. Let’s also talk about the “art of coaching,” coaching by feel, and the concept of optimal training.

This is a system that produces results in any environment – girl’s or boy’s teams, small schools and big ones, urban, suburban or rural. Like any system, you’ve got to “work it to make it work.” You won’t get results by making large deviations from the system. I’m not responsible for average or sub-par outcomes if you’re deviating this spring.

I completely understand wanting to be creative with training, combining workouts and strategies from various sources. But joining me this spring means implementing and trusting the system. With great note taking and small, logical adjustments over the next 2-3 years, you’ll settle on a system of training that works optimally in your environment. But trying to come up with an optimal system without mentorship takes years, even a decade. My system works, and it will work in your environment. If you use it this spring, your kids will run PRs. Simply take good notes to figure out the one or two things you may (or may not) change a year from now.

Let’s talk about the “art of coaching” and coaching by feel. A coach with decades of experience has a feel for when to adjust things in training. This is the “art of coaching.” These coaches make intuitive adjustments throughout the season that lead to great performances. Every coach should strive to get to this level of mastery.

But the coach with less than a decade of experience has had fewer “reps” and hasn’t confronted enough challenges to develop this intuition. Should you adjust the workout on a horribly windy day at the track or skip it and wait a day? If you skip it, should you do a circuit inside? How hard should the circuit be?

All coaches make decisions like these 10-20 times throughout a season. Veteran coaches have a feel for what to do and their athletes run fast because of their savvy decisions. Less successful coaches struggle with these choices. While they may make the right choice at times, they just as often make errors that lead to downstream consequences – injuries, athletes failing to PR, or athletes plateauing in the final weeks of the season.

If you join me this spring, you’ll have a home base – a system that works – and I’ll teach you how to think about training that will start you down the path to coaching by feel. Most coaches aren’t at a level of mastery where they can rely on the “art of coaching” to lead them to choices that result in great performances by their athletes. If you join me, you’ll be tapping into my two decades of experience and can avoid all the mistakes I’ve made as a coach.

Now this talk about optimal training. Simply put, there is no way to know if a training system is optimal. What we can see is if a system leads to a variety of athletes running PRs, and that’s what this system will do. Your athletes will run fast this spring because the system works. I can’t say the system you’ll learn is optimal, just as another coach can’t say that their training is optimal. We simply can’t know. To me, this is what’s exciting – making adjustments to the system for different coach’s situations, allowing everyone who is enrolled to learn from each other.

This Isn’t For Everyone

(And It May Not Be For You)

If you’re wanting to survey my training and pick and choose what works, please don’t enroll. Would you learn a great deal about training? Yes. But unless you’re committed to following the system this spring, you won’t make the dramatic improvements other coaches will. Said another way, the people who learn the system, implement the system, and take good notes will have a slew of PRs in April and May. But they won’t do it by combining it with things they’ve done in the past or things read about online.

If you’d rather look at a lot of different training systems, then you can get all the Boulder Running Clinics videos or all three seasons of High School Running Coach

But if you find yourself questioning how to design your training, those aren’t the best educational offerings for you. Instead, join me this winter and spring, learn my system, take notes during the year, and consider adjusting elements in my system to fit your environment.
